The Origin
A u n i q u e a r e a
Viña Salceda was born on the banks of the Ebro, in one of the most charismatic villages in the history of wine: Elciego, in Rioja Alavesa. Here, more than 150 years ago, a handful of pioneers reinvented the way of growing and making wine to achieve more lively, long-lasting and elegant wines. Today this legacy persists in our vineyards, caressed by the Ebro, cared with the greatest respect for tradition and the landscape of a unique place in the world.
Viña Salceda seeks to revalue the richness of a wine region through its long historical heritage with a contemporary vision. Through this approach it honors its past and, at the same time, adapts to the renewed oenological trend in Rioja.
Tradición vinícola

The history of Rioja Alavesa has always been linked to the history of wine. The establishment of viticulture in this area can be attributed to the Romans, who settled here because of its climate and orography. Vessels from Roman times have been found, which were used for the fermentation of wine, which confirms the production of wine in Elciego since ancient times. And it was at the end of the 15th century, when a long period of progress meant a strong expansion of the vineyard, turning it practically into a monoculture. Since then, all the knowledge that has been acquired has been applied to the process of winemaking and wine treatment, the result of the experience that the passage of time has given.

A distinctive atmosphere surrounds the vineyards of Rioja. Between La Sierra de Cantabria and La Sierra de la Demanda, the Ebro river forms an extensive valley with an ideal climate for growing vines.
Protected by both mountain ranges, the vineyards breathe a combination of climatic influences in harmony: the humid atmosphere of the north Atlantic and the dry and extreme nuances coming from the Meseta; the pleasant influence of the nearby river and the fresh air of the mountains surrounding the wide valley of the Ebro.
THE WINERY BY THE BRIDGE

A few meters from Viña Salceda, a bridge over the Ebro River was built at the end of the 19th century. It connected Elciego (Rioja Alavesa) and Cenicero (Rioja Alta), allowing the wine from our villages and vineyards to reach all markets better. It had to overcome floods and even a blowing up during the last Carlist war, but it resisted and today represents a whole era: the birth of the modern Rioja.
We feel part of the history of the bridge. It is an important construction, a symbol of overcoming and openness. Today, our bridge over the Ebro is the inspiration to progress, to go further, to reach both the oldest restaurant in the world and the tables of today’s consumers.
Come and meet us
“The soils and climate are favorable. The viticulture, committed to the environment. The cellar work, precise and experienced. But there is more. There is a vision: to select the best grapes from which we create a complete range of honest and seductive wines. Among them, three new products: the result of an innovative effort – accompanied by constant investment in the winery – which in recent years has allowed us to grow in quality, modernity and potential for expression.”
