The Origin

A p r i v i l e g e d l o c a t i o n

Viña Salceda was born on the slopes of the Ebro, in one of the most charismatic villages in the history of wine: Elciego, in Rioja Alavesa. Here, more than 150 years ago, a handful of pioneers reinvented the way of growing and making wine to achieve more lively, long-lasting and elegant wines. Today this legacy lives on in our vineyards, caressed by the Ebro, cared for with the utmost respect for tradition and the landscape of a unique place in the world.

Tradición vinícola

U n e n c l a v e l i g a d o a l v i n o

The history of Rioja Alavesa has always been linked to the history of wine. The establishment of viticulture in this area can be attributed to the Romans, who settled here because of its climate and orography. Vessels from Roman times have been found, which were used for the fermentation of wine, which confirms the production of wine in Elciego since ancient times. And it was at the end of the 15th century, when a long period of progress meant a strong expansion of the vineyard, turning it practically into a monoculture. Since then, all the knowledge that has been acquired has been applied to the process of winemaking and wine treatment, the result of the experience that the passage of time has given.

Between the Sierra de Cantabria and the Sierra de la Demanda, the Ebro river creates a wide valley with the perfect climate for vineyards.
A combination of different climatic influences working in harmony: the humid air from the north Atlantic and the harsh dryness from the Meseta. Clay and limestone soil provides the roots of the vine with nutrients, in the perfect amount to ensure the grapes are delicare and balanced.

THE WINERY BY THE BRIDGE

B u i l d b r i d g e s , o p e n u p t o t h e w o r l d

At the end of the 19th century a bridge was built across the Ebro, a few metres from Viña Salceda. The bridge withstood floods and was damaged in the Third Carlist War, but it survived and today represents a whole era: the birth of modern Rioja.
What made that possible was the bridge and it is what reflects who we are. That inspiration led to what we do today in Viña Salceda and what we convey.

Come and meet us

“The soils and climate are favorable. The viticulture, committed to the environment. The cellar work, precise and experienced. But there is more. There is a vision: to select the best grapes from which we create a complete range of honest and seductive wines. Among them, three new products: the result of an innovative effort – accompanied by constant investment in the winery – which in recent years has allowed us to grow in quality, modernity and potential for expression.”
